Provision in Year 2 builds upon the skills developed in Year 1.
Children enjoy a creative curriculum and an active learning approach to
embed and develop basic skills in all areas of the National Curriculum. Just
like in Year 1, we work hard to develop skills in reading, writing and maths.
During the summer term, children in Year 2 are tested using the Standard
Attainment Tasks. This is a very informal process for staff and children,
please rest assured the children are not under unnecessary pressure during this
time. Instead this time of year our key focus is to create independent learners
and critical thinkers in preparation for the move to Key Stage 2.
Our aims in Year Two is to provide a stimulating and reflective
learning environment. We encourage confident, reflective and playful learners,
filled with their own sense of purpose and self-belief. As teachers we listen
to the children as they discuss the challenge of new experiences, pose questions
and solve problems. We explore a wide variety of ICT resources that will allow
the children to extend their learning through technology. Children are
encouraged to be respectful and mindful with one another to support and nurture
each other on a daily basis. As children of The Pearl Academy we instil a sense
of pride in the children to care for their school and their wider community
that we are part of.
Year 2’s dinosaur day went down with a roar! A fantastic day
was had by both teachers and students on our end of unit theme day for ‘ Did dinosaurs
really exist?’. We spent the day consolidating our knowledge and understanding
of our topic; the children were excellent at describing the dinosaurs they came
dressed as and were able to tell their peers about their diet, body type, size
and many other interesting facts. We also had many palaeontologists join us for
the day and were delighted to hear their stories about careful digging and
discoveries of fossils. We reflected on
the work we have done during this topic, looking at our great pop-up pages and
were pleased at how our fact finding abilities have grown. We talked about how palaeontologists
have reached conclusions about dinosaurs that lived millions of years ago and
came to our own conclusions looking at fossils.
The children also engaged in art and DT projects which included fossil
making, dinosaur silhouettes and paper plate dinosaurs.
The Year 2 team would like to say a big thank you to parents
for helping to provide or prepare costumes for the day; the children looked
spectacular and the effort made by all involved is much appreciated.
inquiry focus is How have machines changed our world? We are focusing on 2 key
texts for this unit. Teacher pleaser and bedroom tidier machine.
